JMPM Special issue: "Project, program and portfolio governance”

CALL FOR PAPERS: The Journal of Modern PM

Special issue on "Project, program and portfolio governance”

Conference website:

The theory of Project Governance has been repeatedly discussed for the last two decades by both communities of academics and practitioners. However, a full understanding of the connections and implications of connecting Project to Portfolio Governance is till missing. This comes from the inherent wideness of the concept of Governance and the contextual complexity of the interrelationships among Projects, Programs and Portfolios (PPPs) due to strategic alignments, business models, organizations, managerial processes, uncertainty, required competencies, and stakeholders. Many failures in project-based companies contribute to corroborate this missing linkage and there is no evidence that this is typical of specific industries.

This Special Issue seeks original contributions from scholars and practitioners internationally to investigate the knowledge gaps, how to bridge theoretical modelling and practice, and in the end to propose the theories and practices of implementing successful PPPs governance. That is expected to improve the capability of an organization to set more efficient processes, be more effective in decision making, pursue stronger sustainability, and be more credible and reliable under the perspective of investors.

The Special Issue will also carry revised and substantially extended versions of select papers presented at the Summer School “Francesco Turco” to be held in Palermo, Italy, September 12-14, 2018.

Preferably, the proposed papers should be based on empirical studies or provide theoretical/conceptual analysis of the chosen subject. Contributions are welcome about, although not limited to, the following topics:

  • Governance of projects and portfolios
  • Risk management in project portfolios
  • Modelling project selection
  • Managing PPP scope and content
  • Optimizing project based organizations
  • PPP control under uncertainty
  • PPP vulnerability and resilience
  • Good practices for PPP optimization
  • Competences for PPP success and benefit realization
