Project Management of Transfer from Space to the Earth: Supporting Open-Collaborative Projects in the Canadian Space Agency

Abstract

This paper proposes a methodology to support the management of collaborative projects between the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) and industrial partners (particularly small-size or start-up enterprises), and exploring how the technology transfer should be boosted using new media tools. Particular emphasis was placed on crowdsourcing platforms and familiar tools used by enterprises. Results show that the process of developing collaborative projects was not sufficiently supported by current ICT tools. The data also revealed the important role played by social dynamics in the first stages of product conceptualization to harness open collaboration in further development of projects.

    Luz-Maria Jiménez-Narvaez, Ph. D is a lecturer and consultant in Innovation and Project Management. She is currently completing her postdoctoral research at the École de technologie supérieure ÉTS-Montréal for the design of: a Collaborative Platform for Canadian Space Agency and Small and Medium size Enterprises for spatial Technology Transfer, and for the design of an Ideas Management System for the Institute of Research of Hydro-Quebec. She was the recipient of a grant from the Fonds québécois de la recherche sur la nature et les technologies FQRNT 2007-2010 for the project “Espaces virtuels d’innovation” (Virtual Spaces of Innovation). She holds a Ph.D in Engineering of the Department of Automated Production in the field of Creative Innovation Management. Her thesis was entitled: “Design of a Collaborative Information and Communication Technology Platform to support creativity in innovation activities”.

    Mickaël Gardoni is a Professor in Industrial Engineering at the Institut National des Sciences Appliquées de Strasbourg (INSA), France and works at Ecole de Technologie Supérieure, a leading Engineering School for Industry at Montréal (Québec – Canada). He holds a mechanical engineering certificate from the Ecole Nationale d'Ingénieurs de Metz (ENIM). He conducts his research at the Génie de la Conception (LGeCo) laboratory at INSA de Strasbourg in partnership with the Products, Processes, and Systems Engineering Laboratory (P2SEL) at ETS. His research interests include CSCW, Information Management, Knowledge Management, data exchange, concurrent engineering and more recently the Management of Design, Research and Development and Research activities.
