Abstract

Technical communication is a key feature in Global Product Development (GPD) project to coordinate geographically distributed change management process due to a new functionality requirement or technology. Design Structure Matrix (DSM) and Multi-Domain Matrix (MDM) models are effective approaches for predicting technical communication and change propagation, optimizing GPD organization, and reducing change complexity. This paper presents the involvement degree matrix with the notion of gain factors among distributed teams to explore the factors influencing communication frequency in GPD. Further, this paper proposes a method to measure the combined change likelihood matrix based on numerical change propagation paths order, which extends previous change propagation algorithms. Finally, an industrial example is provided to illustrate the proposed models of predicting technical communication related to product’s change. Results provide an integrated managerial insight to reflect how change propagation can impact the technical communication among team’s organization.

    Sonia Kherbachi, School of Economics and Management, University of Science and Technology Beijing (soniakherbachi@gmail.com) – She received the Bachelor in Enterprise Management (2010) and the Master in Territories Management Attractiveness and Entrepreneurship (2010) from University A.M. Bejaia, Bejaia, Algeria. She is currently a PhD researcher in Enterprise Management and Engineering in the Dongling School of Economics and Management, Beijing, China. Her research efforts are applied in improving global product development projects. She is particularly interested in studying coordination and innovation networks among distributed complex team organizations.

    Qing Yang, School of Economics and Management, University of Science and Technology Beijing affiliation – He received the B.E., M.E., and PhD degrees from Northwestern Polytechnical University, Xi’an, China. He is currently a Professor in the Dongling School of Economics and Management, Beijing, China. He worked earlier as a Senior Project Manager in a company (1991-2000) managing complex development projects. He was also a Postdoctoral Researcher (2003-2005) in the School of Economics and Management at Beihang University and served as a visiting scholar in the Marcus Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering (2010), Pennsylvania State University. His research interests include managing the development process of complex engineering projects based on the design structure matrix.
