Abstract

Nowadays, firms tend to conduct IT projects in collaboration with external parties who share, directly or indirectly, similar organizational strategies. These projects can become increasingly complex due to the number and nature of the relationships between project components. In such circumstances, risk management processes can help project teams reduce uncertainties and achieve project success. However, projects continue to fail even when risk management has been well taken into consideration and risk management practices well applied. This paper reviews the literature in order to understand the complexity behind the temporary multi-organizations (TMO) and to evaluate the capacity of actual risk management practices to address this complexity. It concludes that actual risk management practices do not properly address TMO’s complexity for IT projects and indicate new directions for research to fill the gap between risk management and TMOs IT project contexts.

  • Khalil Rahi, United Arab Emirates

    Dr. Khalil Rahi is an assistant professor in project management at Abu-Dhabi University. He has more than 14 years of industrial and academic experience in information technology project management, engineering management, software development, risk management, project and organizational resilience, and project leadership. Mainly in international companies in Canada, and the middle-east. He received his Ph.D. from Polytechnique Montreal – Canada in industrial engineering, specializing in IT project resilience and management. He also holds an MBA in IT management from Laval University – Canada, and a Bachelor degree in electrical engineering from Polytechnique Montreal – Canada. Dr. Rahi is certified Project Management Professional (PMP) and holds the ITIL v3 Foundation certificate. Dr. Rahi’s lectures project management at graduate level, and is also active in research in the areas of project resilience and management in many sectors. He is also the author of several scientific papers in peer-reviewed international journals.
