Project Team Learning in Mega Projects: Are we truly learning the lessons?

Abstract

With the increasing focus on organizational learning in project organizations, it becomes curtail to understand the learning process and how it evolves within project teams. There is limited and shallow coverage of learning and its challenges in a project team environment. Moreover, there is contradicting views in the literature as to whether learning is truly happening on projects. This paper will investigate through multiple case study approach project team learning in mega projects. Key findings from this study will identify the root causes of project team failure to learn and the challenges and barriers faced by project teams in fostering a learning culture. Moreover, the study will highlight a set of enablers that can be implemented in projects to enhance the learning capabilities of both individuals and groups working as project teams which will eventually lead to a learning organization.

  • Hani Gharaibeh, PMPC Consulting Inc

    Dr. Gharaibeh is PhD, PMP, RMP and Managing Director at the PMPC Consulting Inc.

    A civil engineer with 15 yrs. of experience in engineering and construction management working in commercial, industrial and infrastructure projects in Jordan and Canada. He started his career as a site engineer in several construction projects in Jordan and gradually worked his way up to project management working with major engineering consulting firms in Jordan and Canada. He has gained extensive experience in project controls, project planning and cost control on major projects working for well-known Canadian engineering and construction firm.

    Dr. Gharaibeh has acquired strong academic knowledge and qualifications in engineering and project management through obtaining his MEng degree in Engineering Management from Griffith University, Australia and his PhD in Project Management, from University of Calgary, Canada. This paper represents part of his PhD dissertation completed at the University of Calgary, AB, Canada under the supervision of Dr Francis Hartman. He is also a certified project management and certified risk management professional from PMI and a FIDIC trainer and project management instructor teaching various project management courses. He is currently the Managing Director of PMPC Consulting Inc., a firm which delivers elite project management service and project controls solutions to its clients across the world.
