Abstract

The global product development (GPD) project is complex and there is a need to integrate a specific communication process among teams involved in the project. In each stage of a GPD project, effective and efficient communication becomes a core issue. The purpose of this paper is to introduce a multi-domain structure matrix (MDM) enables the systematic identification of interdependencies, explores the teams communication process in GPD. This paper presents a tool to identify efficient communication process map and technical communication for each function of the overall project. The outcomes of this process are identifying teams’ communication process as an efficiency requirement for a GPD project, and MDM analysis as a methodology of managing complex process structure.

    Sonia Kherbachi received her Bachelor in Enterprise Management (2010) and her Master in Territories Management and Entrepreneurship(2012) from University A.M. Bejaia in Algeria. She is currently a Management Engineering PhD Researcher in University of Science and Technology Beijing (China). Her research efforts are applied to improving global product development systems. She is particularly interested in studying coordination and innovation networks incomplex product and globally distributed team organizations.

    Qing Yang received the B.E., M.E., and Ph.D.degrees from Northwestern Polytechnical University, Xian, China. He is currently a Professor in the Dongling School of Economics and Management,University of Science and Technology Beijing, Beijing, China. He worked earlier as a Senior Project Manager in a company (1991–2000) managing complex development projects. He also worked with the Project Management Focus Team as a Postdoctoral Researcher (2003–2005) in the School of Economics and Management at Beihang University and served as a Visiting Scholar in 2010 in the Marcus Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering, Pennsylvania State University. His research interests include managing the development process of complex engineering projects, the design structure matrix, design process modeling, optimization and simulation, and lean management in product development projects. He has published numerous articles

    Yoo S. Hong received the B.S. and M.S. degreesin Industrial Engineering from Seoul National University, Seoul, Korea, and the Ph.D. degree in Industrial Engineering from Purdue University,West Lafayette, IN, USA. He is a Professor of Industrial Engineering at Seoul National University.He taught at the University of Toledo, USA, as an Assistant Professor. His current research interests include the area of product and service engineering. His main research interests include product architecture and platform design, new product/service development, sustainable product design, product life-cycle management, and product-development processes.
